Wire mesh – welded and woven
Wire mesh is the most versatile product in our catalogue: the same material serves a fence, a sieve, a render backing, a cage or reinforcement. The choice comes down to three questions: how the mesh is made, how large the aperture is, and how thick the wire is.
Welded mesh is welded together from crossing wires. It holds its shape, the apertures do not shift and a cut edge does not unravel. Woven mesh is interwoven from wires. It is more flexible and cheaper, but the apertures can shift under load.
We sell mesh both in sheets (1000 × 2000 up to 1500 × 3000 mm) and in rolls (up to 25 m). Sheets suit places where the mesh has to stay flat; a roll suits a long run to be covered.

Where it is used
Fences and barriers
Enclosing a plot, animal pens and temporary barriers. The most common use, usually galvanized mesh from a roll.
Reinforcement and render
Reinforcing a concrete floor and backing render, where the mesh holds the material together and prevents cracking.
Sieves and separators
Separating material into fractions, where the aperture is chosen to suit the material being sieved.
Guard mesh and cages
Protection for windows and ventilation openings, partitions in storage rooms and animal cages.
How to choose
Welded or woven mesh
Welded mesh holds its shape and is stiffer. Choose it when the mesh has to stay flat or carry load. Woven mesh is more flexible and cheaper, and suits a soft backing and places where stiffness does not matter.
Mesh aperture
The aperture (30 × 30 mm, say) is chosen by what has to pass through or be held back. On a fence the aperture also decides how well you can see through it.
Wire thickness
Thicker wire (3–4 mm) gives a stiffer mesh that stays flat between supports. Thinner wire (0.65–2 mm) suits lighter use and delivery in rolls.
Finish
Black mesh has to be protected by painting or coating. Galvanized mesh suits outdoor conditions. Stainless is chosen for damp, salty or food-contact environments.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between welded and woven mesh?
In welded mesh the wires are welded together where they cross, so the mesh is stiff and a cut edge does not unravel. In woven mesh the wires are interwoven. It is more flexible and cheaper, but the apertures can shift.
Is mesh sold in rolls as well?
Yes. Rolls are usually 20–25 m long and 1000–2000 mm wide. In sheets we sell sizes from 1000 × 2000 to 1500 × 3000 mm.
Which mesh should I choose for a fence?
The most common choices are galvanized welded mesh from a roll, or a panel fence. If the fence has to be rigid and stand straight, choose a panel fence; if a large area is to be enclosed cheaply, choose roll mesh.
