Chequer plate – aluminium, steel and stainless

Chequer plate is sheet metal with a raised pattern rolled into its surface. The pattern gives footwear and tyres grip even when the surface is wet or oily, and it stiffens the sheet, so a plate of the same thickness carries more than a plain one.

We stock chequer plate in three materials: aluminium (light, does not rust, suits the insides of vehicles and boxes), black steel (strongest and cheapest, needs painting or galvanizing) and stainless steel AISI 304 (food industry and damp environments).

Standard sizes are 1000 × 2000, 1250 × 2500 and 1500 × 3000 mm, in thicknesses of 2–6 mm. We cut the sheet to your size. You do not have to buy a whole sheet when you only need a piece.

Where it is used

Industrial floors and walkways

Around machinery, on maintenance walkways and platforms, where the floor has to be closed but not slippery.

Stair treads and landings

A chequer plate tread covering, where the openness of a grating is not needed or where nothing may fall through.

Vehicles and trailers

Box covers, trailer floors, loading ramps and step boards, usually in aluminium so as not to add weight.

Protective covers

Covers over equipment and cable channels that are walked on.

How to choose

Material

Aluminium where weight matters and corrosion is a problem. Black steel where strength is needed and price matters, but the surface has to be protected. Stainless where the surface must stay untreated and cleanable.

Thickness

Thickness is chosen from the load and the spacing of the supports. For a box floor or a step board 2–3 mm is usually enough; for an industrial floor or a surface driven on, 4–6 mm.

Sheet size

If the part is larger than a standard sheet, a seam has to be allowed for. Give the final dimensions in your request and we will offer the solution with the least waste.

Frequently asked questions

Is chequer plate the same as corrugated sheet?

It is the same product our supplier lists as “corrugated sheet”. In Estonia it is commonly called rihvelplekk, and in English chequer or tread plate: sheet metal with a raised pattern.

What thickness should I choose for a floor?

It depends on how closely the plate is supported underneath and how large the load is. For a walked-on floor with close support 3 mm is enough; for a surface driven on choose 4–6 mm. Tell us the spacing between supports and we will advise.

Do you cut the sheet to my size?

Yes. Send the dimensions and the number of pieces, and we will cut them and include the cutting in the quote.

Is aluminium plate strong enough?

Aluminium is softer than steel, so for the same load one thickness step up is usually chosen. In return it is about three times lighter and does not rust.
