Expanded metal mesh
Expanded metal is made from one whole sheet: staggered slits are cut into it and the sheet is then stretched open, so the slits open into diamond-shaped apertures. No material is added and none is removed. That is why expanded metal is stiffer than woven or welded mesh of the same weight, and why it cannot come apart.
Because the mesh has no welded joints, it has no weak points either. That is why it is used where mesh has to stand up to impact and tension: on machine guards, balustrades and facades.
The catalogue holds both unflattened mesh (the apertures stay slightly raised, which adds grip) and flattened mesh (rolled smooth, for where the surface has to be level).

Where it is used
Balustrades and machine guards
Guards for equipment and barriers around hazardous areas, where the mesh has to take a knock without coming apart.
Facades and screens
Facade cladding, car park screens and sun shading, where a view has to be screened but air must still move through.
Walkways and treads
Unflattened mesh gives an anti-slip surface on platforms and treads.
Render mesh and reinforcement
A base for render and concrete, where a mechanical key is needed.
How to choose
Aperture size
The designation “4×4×1.5 (8×7)” gives the internal aperture, the strand width and, in brackets, the external dimension. A smaller aperture screens more and is stiffer; a larger one lets through more light and air.
Flattened or unflattened
Unflattened mesh is raised and anti-slip. Flattened mesh is level and thinner, and suits places where the mesh fixes to a flat surface or where a smooth appearance is wanted.
Material
Black steel for coating or painting, galvanized for outdoors, aluminium where weight matters, stainless for damp and otherwise aggressive environments.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between expanded and welded mesh?
Expanded mesh is slit and stretched from one whole sheet; welded mesh is welded together from separate wires. Expanded mesh is stiffer and cannot come apart at a joint; welded mesh has a regular square aperture and is lighter.
What does flattened mean?
Flattened mesh has been rolled level after stretching. That makes it thinner and smoother, but reduces its grip.
