Steel gratings and grating floors from Pärnu

A steel grating is a load-bearing floor element made of bearing bars joined crosswise by transverse rods. It carries load, lets water, light and air through, and collects no dirt on its surface. That is why it is used wherever a plain sheet cover would turn slippery or hold water.

The catalogue is mainly welded gratings of the SP type, where the bearing bars are welded to the cross rods. The standard size is 1000 × 1000 mm, and panels of 3050 × 1000 and 6100 × 1000 mm are also available. The material is either hot-dip galvanized black steel or stainless steel AISI 304 and AISI 316.

Every grating can be cut to the size you need. We also make them to your own measurements and drawings.

Where it is used

Industrial floors and platforms

Walkways in production buildings, machine maintenance balconies and intermediate platforms, where the floor has to carry people and equipment and let spilled liquids through.

Channel covers and drains

Covers for stormwater and process channels. The grating carries traffic load and stays openable for maintenance.

Walkways and stair landings

External walkways, rooftop maintenance routes and intermediate stair landings, where snow and water have to fall through.

Guards and screens

Screens for technical equipment, covers over ventilation openings and facade elements, where air permeability and mechanical protection are needed at once.

How to choose

Designations

SP
Welded grating. The bearing bars and cross rods are welded together.
S5 / serrated
A toothed top edge on the bearing bar, giving extra slip resistance.
Bearing bar
The load-carrying vertical flat steel, whose height and thickness set the capacity.
Mesh size
The clear opening between bearing bars and cross rods, e.g. 34 × 38 mm.
Fv
Uniformly distributed load, daN/m². Roughly kilograms per square metre.
Fp
Point load on a 200 × 200 mm patch, daN.

Mesh size

The mesh size (34 × 38 mm, say) determines how much falls through and how comfortable the grating is to walk on. A smaller mesh is easier underfoot and safer for narrow heels; a larger mesh passes water and dirt more readily.

Bearing bar height and thickness

The bearing bar dimension (30 × 3 mm, say) determines the load capacity. The taller the bar and the shorter the span between supports, the more load the grating carries. The load table (the button next to the quote request) gives Fv and Fp for each bar and span.

Material and finish

Hot-dip galvanized black steel suits most outdoor and industrial conditions. Stainless AISI 304 is chosen for food industry and damp environments, AISI 316 for coastal and chloride-rich ones.

Edge finish

A cut grating has to be banded at the edge so the cross rods stay in place. We include the banding in the quote when the product is cut to size.

Frequently asked questions

How do I choose the load capacity of a grating?

Capacity depends on the height and thickness of the bearing bar and on the span between supports. Open the load table next to the quote request, pick a bar and a span, and it shows Fv and Fp. If the load or the support is unusual, say so in the request.

Are gratings cut to size?

Yes. We cut gratings to the size you need and band the cut edge so the cross rods stay in place. Cutting is included in the quote.

What is the difference between a galvanized and a stainless grating?

A hot-dip galvanized grating costs less and suits most outdoor and industrial conditions. A stainless grating is chosen when the environment is damp, chemically aggressive, or when it is a food industry setting.
