Metal stair treads – anti-slip grating treads

The stair tread is the most worn and the most dangerous part of a staircase. People stand on it with wet and dirty footwear. A grating tread solves both problems: water, snow and dirt fall through, the front edge is serrated, and no slippery layer builds up.

The catalogue has treads for straight stairs and treads for spiral stairs, whose width changes along the tread. They are made of the same welded grating (SP) as the gratings, but with a reinforced anti-slip front edge and fixing angles.

Sideplate dimensions

The sideplate welded to the end of the tread is what fixes the tread to the stair. A standard tread has a rectangular DIN-type plate; a FIN-type tread has a plate with chamfered ends and different hole positions.

Standard tread

Sideplate dimensions hold for treads of different lengths. Hole positions do not depend on tread length L.

FIN-type tread

A FIN-type sideplate is not a DIN-type plate. Plate height is 45 mm on treads up to 900 mm long, and 55 mm from 1000 mm.

Where it is used

External stairs

Building exterior stairs, loading platform stairs and escape stairs, where snow and ice would gather on a plain tread in winter.

Industrial stairs and platforms

Maintenance stairs to machinery, roof access stairs and approaches to process platforms.

Spiral stairs

A way to move vertically in a tight space. The treads are wedge-shaped and fix to a central post.

How to choose

SP: A tread made of welded grating, the same construction as the gratings.
Serrated: The front edge is toothed, so footwear does not slip.
Spiral stair tread: A wedge-shaped tread whose width changes along its length.
FIN: A Finnish-type tread. The sideplate has chamfered ends and is not a DIN-type plate.

Front edge type

A serrated front edge grips better and is required on most industrial sites. A plain front edge suits a dry indoor setting.

Tread size

The length of the tread is the width of the stair; the depth is usually 200–400 mm. A spiral stair tread has two widths: a narrower inner and a wider outer end.

Load capacity

As with gratings, the bearing bar dimension sets the capacity. The span on a stair tread is normally short, so a 30 × 2 or 30 × 3 mm bar is usually enough.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a serrated and a plain tread?

A serrated front edge grips markedly better with wet or dirty footwear. On an external stair and in industry, always choose serrated.

Are there treads for spiral stairs?

Yes, the catalogue has separate spiral stair treads whose width changes along the tread. We need the diameter of the stair and the number of treads per turn.

How does the tread fix to the stair?

The sideplates welded to the ends have holes for fixing bolts. A standard tread has a rectangular DIN-type plate; a FIN-type tread has a chamfered plate with different hole positions. Open the drawings next to the quote request and pick the tread depth. State the stringer type in the request.
